Why Tokenization Is the New Priority for State Street<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Tokenization is transforming the financial industry by converting traditional assets into digital tokens<\/a><\/strong>. These tokens make it easier to trade, increase liquidity, and allow for fractional ownership. Donna Milrod, State Street\u2019s Chief Product Officer, expressed concern that these regulations could hinder the bank’s ability to handle crypto assets effectively. The shift away from cryptocurrency custody is largely driven by the SEC\u2019s Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 (SAB 121). This bulletin requires banks to hold significant capital reserves to manage the risks of digital assets, which complicates the ability of banks to offer crypto custody services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


State Street has long been a leader in digital innovation. The bank has previously partnered with Galaxy Asset Management to launch exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to cryptocurrency firms. In 2021, State Street even created a dedicated unit to focus on digital assets, tokenization, and cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, with its focus on tokenization, State Street is preparing to offer services that include round-the-clock trading and better collateral management. They expect to announce the first clients for the new services soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
